Secondary Skill Building

Secondary Skill Building courses are non-credit face-to-face courses. Students may take these courses to review previously covered course content OR to preview a course that they will take in the future.  For example, a Grade 9 Math Skill Building class might include students who have taken Math 9 and would benefit from reviewing the Grade 9 curriculum or students are in grade 8 who want to preview the Grade 9 curriculum.

Secondary Skill Building courses are available to all students who will be in Grades 9 through 11 as of the upcoming September (with the exception of Band and Culinary courses, which are open to students who will be in Grades 8 through 11 as of the upcoming September).

Note: Classes do not cover the entire curriculum in the course area. They do not replace an entire grade. Students completing these courses do not receive a final letter grade, nor is this course recorded on their transcript. Students will be assessed only on the curriculum content that is covered during the 3-week program.

Secondary Academic Completion

Secondary Academic Completion courses are for students who were unsuccessful during the school year and are being given the opportunity to receive credit (a passing grade) for the course by attending Summer Learning.

Grade 10 students who received a final mark of 40-49% can be referred by their teacher/counsellor to one of the two courses below:
  • Math 10 Foundations and Pre-Calculus
  • Science 10

Academic Completion courses are face-to-face courses; students are expected to attend all classes in person.

These courses are by referral only from the student's home school counsellor.

High School Credit

High School Credit courses are full credit face-to-face courses. Students who successfully complete these courses will receive full credit and a final course mark on their transcript.

Please be aware that High School Credit courses are rigorous and intense.  Completing a full credit course in six weeks requires a serious commitment from the student as classes are 3.5 hours long, there is regular homework involved, and daily attendance is mandatory.  Please register only if you are making this commitment.

Most full-credit Math and Science courses will charge a $35 materials or workbook fee.

Registration is open to all school aged students, whether or not enrolled in SD43 schools.  Students must be able to attend in-person classes weekly throughout the program.  (For fully online courses please visit Coquitlam Open Learning).
